Santa Maria, which is located on the Central Coast of California, is a city in Santa Barbara County. In November 2008, the estimated population of Santa Maria city was 111,972. As per the United States Census, Santa Maria has a total area of 19.8 square miles of which 2.23% is water and the remaining is land. Santa Maria is situated south of the Santa Maria River and north of the unincorporated township of Orcutt, California. The valley is surrounded on the east by the Los Padres National Forest and San Rafael Mountains and to the west by the Pacific Ocean. As per the 2000 census, there were 16,653 families, 22,146 households and 77,423 people residing in the city. The racial makeup of Santa Maria was 66.06% White, 1.78% Native American, 1.87% African American, 0.18% Pacific Islander, 4.74% Asian, 5.36% from two or more races and 28.02% from other races. The median income for a family in the city was $48,233 and the median income for a household was $51,739.
