The basic mission of Santa Monica Museum of Art is that of fostering discovery, innovation, and diversity with respect to contemporary art; that too, at the local, national, and global level. This museum was established in the year 1985; thanks to Abby Sher. Programming of museum started when in the year 1988, Thomas Rhoads took charge as an Executive Director.
