South Lake Tahoe, which lies in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and on the southern shore of the Tahoe Lake, is a city in El Dorado County. The population of South Lake Tahoe was 23,609 as per the 2000 census. The eastern end of the city is geared mainly towards tourism with restaurants, T-shirt shops, the Heavenly Ski Resort and hotels. The city has a total area of about 16.5 square miles according to the United Sates Census Bureau, of which, 6.4 miles is water and 10.1 square miles is land. As of the 2000 census, there were 5,391 families, 9,410 households and 23,609 people. The population density is about 2,347.5 people per square mile. The racial makeup of South Lake Tahoe was 75.73%25 White, 0.97%25 Native American, 0.75%25 Black or African American, 0.17%25 Pacific Islander, 6.01%25 Asian, 3.90%25 from two or more races and 12.48%25 from other races. The median income for a family is about &40,572 and for a household in the city was $34,707.
