Situated on the River Cedar, the city of Cedar Rapids is a beautiful city with lakes, rivers and hills. It has a continental climate with an average winter temperature of around –7°C and an average summer temperature of about 24°C. Summers are a better time to visit the region.
The aboriginals of this city were the Fox and Sac tribes who were basically hunters. Osgood Shepherd was the first permanent European settler in Cedar Rapids. The city was initially named as Rapids City, derived from the rapids on River Cedar; later, in 1848, it was changed to Cedar Rapids.
With a population of approximately 120,700 residents, Cedar Rapids is the second largest city in Iowa. The packaging industry along with telecommunications forms the backbone of Cedar Rapids’s economy which thrives mainly on the enterprise of private individuals.
