Canon City is well-known for being site of four federal and nine state prisons. It goes on to straddle Arkansas River. Moreover, Canon City is a reputable tourist destination with regards to rock climbing and whitewater rafting.
In the year 1994, ‘Board on Geographic Names’ executed the task of approval of ‘addition of tilde’ in Canon City’s official name. It’s amongst the few cities of the US to have ‘ene’ in the name.
As per US Census Bureau, Canon City’s total area consists of 31.2 sq. Km; out of which 0.08%25 consists of water. The sobriquet, i.e. ‘the Climate capital of Colorado’ has been derived from mixture of ‘unique geography’ as well as an elevation of 5300 feet which protects the city with respect to harsh weather.
As per 2000 census, population of Canon City was 15431.
