Pawnee National Grassland is in north central Colorado. The forests and the grassland encompasses of 1.5 million acres of land. Along with the forest, the grassland is head quartered in Fort Collins. The grassland is a depopulated area of the Great Plains. It had limited cultivation in early period of 20th century and was withdrawn from farming after the Dust Bowl. The grassland has many hiking trails, which also includes one which allows foot access to the Pawnee Buttes, a most notable geologic feature of the Grasslands. Bird watching is also a famous recreational activity here for day hikers, at the Chalk Bluffs, a raptor nesting site.
