The Grand Canyon National Park is situated in Arizona in USA. It includes the famous Grand Canyon, a beautiful chasm etched out over millions of years, by the Colorado River. The Grand Canyon National Park spreads over an area of 4927 sq km.
Climatic conditions vary through the region due to the difference in elevation. Hence, the South Rim is relatively pleasant in summers, but the North Rim is a fewer degrees cooler. The Inner Canyon experiences extreme temperatures, with the river often experiencing temperatures beyond 40.6°C. Winters on the South Rim can be extreme. The North Rim remains closed from the advent of heavy snow in November to mid-May.
The Grand Canyon Village forms the headquarters of the park. The region was bestowed with the status of National Monument on 11 January 1908, and a National Park on 26 February 1919.
