Bent’s Old Fort was built in 1833 and is located in Otero County in Colorado. For more than sixteen years of history this fort was known as the only major permanent white settlement on the Santa Fe Trail between Mexican and Missouri settlements. This fort was destroyed under mysterious circumstances in 1849. This area near and around the fort was designated as a National Historic site under the service of the national park in 1960.
