Mesa Verde National Park is located in Montezuma County in south-western Colorado, USA. The park, which means ‘green table’ in Spanish, gets its name because of the dominance of juniper and piñon trees. Towering mesas and steep canyons are also a chief feature of the landscape.
The park, established in 1906, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its well-preserved cliff dwellings.
The average altitude of Mesa Verde can range between 1800 to 2600 m. It has a dry, desert-type climate with hot summers (temperatures of nearly 32°C and frequent thunderstorms) and mild, snowy winters. The varied seasons results in a majority of services being offered between April–October.
The town of Cortez (around 14 km east) has a small airport, while the airport at Durango (56 km to the west) is larger and has daily flights.
