Things to Do in Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado: attractions to See in Mesa Verde National Park

Mesa Verde National Park: Attractions and more...

The chief attractions of Mesa Verde are its protected archaeological sites, which number around 4000. Six hundred of these are cliff dwellings of the ancestral Pueblo tribe and are quite well-preserved. Three of the dwellings (on Chapin Mesa) are open to the public while the others can be viewed from the road.

The Spruce Tree House is open all year round, while Balcony House and Cliff Palace (a large ruin built into an alcove in a rock face) are not accessible in the winter. Impressive mesa-top ruins worth visiting include Cedar Tree Tower, the Sun Temple, Far View Complex and the Badger House Community.

The Chapin Mesa Archaeological Museum has Pueblo artwork exhibits, while displays of contemporary American-Indian culture can be found at the Visitor Center.

On Wetherill Mesa, one can find the keyhole-shaped Mug House which has 94 rooms in four levels. The park’s tallest structure, Square Tower, was occupied in early 1200 AD.
