This county seat of the Montrose County in Colorado, Montrose was incorporated in the year 1882. After having been named several times in the past it was finally named after the character by the same name in the Sir Walter Scott’s novel, The Legend of Montrose. It has a population of 15479 as per the 2005 US census estimates.
It was founded to enable supplies to the nearby mining communities, and then switching over to agriculture after the mines decline. The major boost to the agriculture of Montrose was the construction of the Gunnison Tunnel which provided major irrigation facilities to the region.
Montrose is spread over an area of 11.5 square miles and serves as a gateway to the wonders of the Colorado with the primitive roads of San Juan to the steep granite walls of the Black Canyon National Monument, Montrose is a key experiencing the fine life with its mild climate and the scenic beauty of the place.
