Custer is the seat of Custer County in South Dakota, USA. Located on the French Creek in the Black Hills region, the town covers an area of 4.7 sq km and has a population of around 5,000.
Custer, established in 1875 as the town of Stonewall after the discovery of gold, is considered to be the oldest town in the Black Hills. The town commemorates the discovery of gold with ‘Gold Discovery Days’ held every July.
Custer has a dry climate. Its location in the Black Hills facilitates a pleasant weather with little or no wind. Summers are pleasantly warm with an average temperature of 20°C, while winters are cool with an average temperature of –1°C.
