Death Valley is located in California, USA. It comprises much of the Death Valley National Park, with the Sylvania Mountains forming its northern boundaries and the Owlshead Mountains bordering it to the south.
The valley is the main feature of the Mojave and Colorado Deserts Biosphere Reserve, with the Sierra Nevada mountain range in the north-west and the Amargosa River flowing through the region. It has the lowest elevation in North America at –90 m.
Death Valley is one of the hottest places on earth, with daytime temperatures as high as 54°C in the summer months. Although the valley receives less than 50 mm of rain in a year, it still gets flooded during the monsoon owing to the weak soil being unable to absorb the water.
The region has been inhabited by the Timbisha tribe for almost the whole of the last millennium.
