Badwater, a small spring-fed water body near the main road, is the lowest point in the North American continent. The site is the starting point of the Badwater Ultramarathon (said to be the world’s toughest foot race) which takes place in July and consists of a 215 km course ending at Mount Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous United States.
One can observe various colours of rock at the Artist’s Palette which lies on the face of the Black Mountains. The Mesquite Sand Dunes was the setting for several Hollywood films including scenes from the Star Wars series. The nearby Star Dune is actually shaped like a starfish!
From Furnace Creek (the headquarters of Death Valley National Park), one can head over to the Racetrack Playa (a seasonal dry lake) in the Panamint Mountains. The Playa is famed for its Sailing Stones (rocks which actually seem to move across the surface).
