The city, founded in 1666, has a wealth of historical attractions. Visit the eighteenth-century Plume House built in true Dutch colonial style, the leather-walled Ballantine House and the Military Park which dates back to the founding of the city.
For a taste of Newark’s culture, visit the Newark Museum which has the world renowned Tibetan Collection. The French-Gothic Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart was given its Basilica status by Pope John Paul in 1995 and is the fifth largest cathedral in the US. Another must-visit structure is the First Baptist Peddie Memorial Church which will leave you enthralled with its 200 doors and 25 m high dome.
If you like cherries, you should make a trip to the Branch Brook Park with its 3,500 pink and white cherry trees. The Annual Cherry Blossom Festival takes place here every April, while the next month sees the celebration of Newark’s diversity with the African-American Heritage Parade.
