The Thomas Jefferson Memorial lies in Washington D.C. and is devoted to Thomas Jefferson, who was one of the Founding Fathers of America as well as the 3rd president of the US.
The building was designed by John Russell Pope. It is completely open and encompasses a portico, circular shaped marble steps, a circular colonnade made of Ionic order columns and one shallow dome.
The building is under the management of the National Park Service. In 2007, it was ranked fourth on the List of America's Favourite Architecture by ‘The American Institute of Architects’.
The interior of the building has a bronze statue of Jefferson which weighs about 5 tons and stands around nineteen feet tall.
The walls on the inside of the building have been carved with passages from Jefferson's writings.
Major writings are in the form of sentences that are inscribed on a fresco and were taken from a letter sent by Jefferson to Dr Benjamin Rush on September 23, 1800.
