Elkins is situated in the centre of the state of West Virginia in the USA. This town with a population of approximately 7,100 inhabitants is the administrative centre of Randolph County.
The town is located along the Tygart Valley River and is surrounded by mountain ridges and lofty peaks. Its location has given it the nickname ‘the heart of West Virginia’.
July and August are the warmest months with the average temperature at 27°C; maximum rainfall in the year also occurs at this time. During winter, the temperature consistently falls below the freezing point.
The region was developed at the end of the nineteenth century by the then US Senators, Henry Davis and Stephen Elkins. Coal mines and timbering opportunities were instrumental in the increasing prosperity of the region. With the decline of these industries, Elkins too dwindled into a quiet town.
