It is a part of the Gainesville Metropolitan Statistical Area and is surrounded by Bradford County and Union County to the north, Gilchrist County to the west, Putnam County to the east and Marion County and Levy County to the southeast and southwest respectively. The county was founded in 1824 and is home to the University of Florida. The population count of the county as per the census of 2006 is around 227, 120. The county is known for its diverse culture, local artisans and music. The region gets 52 inches of rainfall and has 225 sunny days on an average per year. July is the warmest month with 92 degrees and January the lowest with 44 degrees.
