It was founded by the officers of the Pensacola & Atlantic Railroad, which was a subsidiary of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad (L&N). This city was named after Frederick R DeFuniak, the president of (L&N).

The population of this city was 5,089 people as per the 2000 census. As per the 2004 estimates, it showed 5,141 people. By 2009, it reached 4,976 people.
