It's hard to decide which aspect of Ft. Lauderdale's Bonnet House is more inspiring, the museum or the gardens. Prepare to be dazzled inside by the priceless works of Seurat, Gauguin and Picasso and outside by exotic orchids, lilies and birds.
The property includes five distinct ecosystems — including everyone's favorties, beach — and is home to two Amazon parrots, a Moluccan cockatiel, squirrel monkeys, gopher tortoises and the occasional manatee.
The house, built in 1920 as a winter retreat for the Birch and Bartlett families, is a work of art itself. Construced in the style of a Carribean plantation house, it contains a rare set of Davenport plates and a bust by sculptor G.B. Lombardi. The grounds were damaged by Hurricanes Katrina and Wilma in 2005 and have been under restoration since 2008.
Definately worth a visit to get a break from the sun and sand!
