The "Venice of America" owes its existence to the waterways that surround it: the Atlantic Ocean, the Intracoastal Waterway and the New River.

At the Old Fort Lauderdale Village and Museum, just steps away from the city's Riverwalk, see how these waters attraced a band of plantation owners and the Seminole Tribe to an abandoned area and how these groups clashed over the fertile lands and waters.

Those very waterways that were the lifeblood of the city almost brought about its downfall during World War II when German U-boats hit several ships off the coast.

Years later, the water proved a mix of livelihood and destruction. The movie "Where the Boys Are" came out in 1960, prompting a flock of college students to hit Fort Lauderdale's beaches, starting the tradition of Spring Break!
