The Fantasy Fair in Key West is an annual street fair organized on the last week of October. The Fantasy Fest was first initiated in 1979 by Tony Falcone and Bill Conkle along with Joe Liska and Frank Romano, to boost business in the beautiful but rather quiet days of late October. Now the 10 day fair includes balls, costume competitions, AIDS fundraisers, body painting events, drag queen contests, costume parties and pet and neighborhood parades. The attendance at Fantasy Fest has now exceeded 100,000 people about over trice the population of the island. The major highlight of the Fest is the parade with comic floats carrying the annually elected Conch King and Queen, which are symbolic names given to two selected residents of Key West.
