A National Historic Landmark since 1973, Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park offers many amenities and activities for visitors to Key West. Those who gravitate towards the ocean can swim in the southern beach, or snorkel and scuba dive right off the coast. Fishermen can also spend hours here enjoying their favorite pastime.
Nature lovers can hike through one of two trails in the park, and enjoy the local vegetation and wildlife. Plaques helpfully identify the local vegetation, and many birds that are found nowhere else in the United States are attracted to the unique environment and use the State Park as a stop on their migratory routes. Cyclists are also welcome to use designated bike routes in the park.
Fort Zachary Taylor is also a historic landmark, and tours of the fort are offered daily at noon, in which visitors can gain an understanding of the Fort's role in the United States Civil War.
For those who wish to take a break from a day of sightseeing and outdoor activities, multiple dining options and picnic areas are available.
