The city of Okeechobee lies in the Okeechobee county of Florida in United States. The population of the city according to the United States Census Bureau in 2004 is 5,784. It is the administrative center of Okeechobee County. Total area of the city is 4.2 square miles. It falls in the Eastern Standard Time(EST) zone. The average temperature of the city during summer (April - Sept.) is 89F to 67F and during winter (Oct. - March) is 78F to 55F. The city, constituted in the year 1915, became the administrative seat of the Okeechobee County in 1917, with the formation of the county. In 1928, Category 5 Hurricanes devastated the city. However, the city was rebuilt later. The international radio broadcasting station, WYFR, is based in Okeechobee. The nearest airport is the Okeechobee County Airport. The festival of Speckled Perch, held annually, is a major event in the city. Okeechobee preserves the cultural, natural, and agricultural heritage of the locality. The village outlook of Okeechobee attracts tourists to the region.
