The J. N Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge is situated on the subtropical barrier island of Sanibel. This refuge is a part of the largest undeveloped mangrove ecosystem in United States. It is popular in the world for its magnificent migratory bird populations. This is one of the 540 refuges in the National Wildlife Refuge System which is administered by the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
