The Sanibel Causeway connects the Sanibel Island with mainland Florida in South Fort Myers and is owned and operated by the Lee County Department of Transportation. It includes 3 separate 2-lane bridge spans along with 2 man-made causeway islands located amid each of the 3 bridges. The Sanibel Causeway originally opened for traffic on May 26, 1963, replacing a ferry boat service that ran from Punta Rassa to Sanibel since 1912.
