Santa Rosa Beach is one among the oldest beach cities along the 30-A and it extends to the north, past the U.S. Highway 98. The Santa Rosa Beach got its name from the Santa Rosa Plantation, which was the flourishing plantation in the north of Hwy. 98 on the Hogtown Bayou in the later part of 1800’s.Santa Rosa Beach was a big centre for the production of turpentine. There were plenty of slash pine trees that made it an ideal place for the turpentine industry. During those times, turpentine was used for caulking the seams of the wooden ships and hence it was known as a "naval stores industry." This industry declined in 1940’s since shipbuilding shifted from wood to steel.
