President Roosevelt designated this wildlife refuge in Vero Beach as the nation’s first wildlife refuge to safeguard the native birds and brown pelicans. Now it contains around 530 refugees spread on a large area. This refuge is accessible by only chartered tours or by boats and people are not allowed to go close to the birds. The refuge is actively taking many steps to protect and enhance the lagoon habitat.
