Gainesville lies in the county seat of Alachua in Florida and is the largest city in the county. The city covers a total area of 49.10 sq miles and has a population of 243,985 as per the 2006 census.
The original local inhabitants were the Timucua Indians. The city has been ranked as one of the best places to live and play by the National Geographic Adventure in 2007. There are a number of deciduous trees found in this city and so the place has been recognized as a 'Tree City' in the USA.
The city experiences wide temperature fluctuations and has a humid subtropical climate. In summers there is frequent rain with high humidity. In winters the nights can be very cold with temperatures going below freezing point.
Spring lasts from February to April with a pleasant climate with low humidity and cloudless blue skies.
Many deciduous trees of sweet gum, hickory, maple and dogwood can be found along with oaks, palm trees and other evergreen plants.
