Attractions
The state’s culture has been strongly influenced by the colonial settlement of English-Americans and Scots-Irish Americans. With the influx of residents from the North, the term ‘Georgia Cracker’ is used by the white residents as a self-description. The state also has a proud African-American heritage as it was the birthplace of the late Martin Luther King.
The capital city is home to popular attractions like the Atlanta Botanical Garden, Atlanta Zoo and Atlanta Aquarium (the largest of its kind in the world with over 500 species). Atlanta’s most famous invention Coca-Cola is glorified in the downtown World of Coca-Cola Museum. Know more about Martin Luther King by visiting his home in the Sweet Auburn District, or visit the Civil War Forts at the touristy city of Savannah, famed for its impressive eighteenth and nineteenth century architecture.
A plethora of events awaits tourists to Georgia. Apart from the beer-filled Oktoberfest, the Atlanta Campaign Civil War Re-enactment happens every November, while the Tree Lightning Ceremony is a beloved local event that takes place in the heart of Atlanta in December. The two-month long Georgia Renaissance Festival is organized each spring with a medieval theme alongside the St Patrick’s Day Parade that takes place in the city of Atlanta every March and draws thousands of people.
