Fitzgerald is the county seat of the Ben Hill County and is one of the first planned cities in America. With a population of 8758 as per the 2000 US census, it was created by the newspaper editor, Philander H. Fitzgerald as a community for the war veterans of the American Civil War. It is spread over a total area of 7.2 square miles of land area and 0.04 square miles of water.
It also boasts of a fascinating array of historical architectural and modern architecture like the art deco style Grand Theater and the famous Dorminy and Masee Bed and Breakfast constructed in the Greek Revival Georgian style in 1915.
There are also a number of tourist events like the Wild Chicken Festival and the Downtown Easter Egg hunt and other festivals. The downtown offers great cultural and recreation facilities with shops, eateries, museums, parks and other highlights.
