Located on the north shore of the Icy Passage at the mouth of the Salmon River, Gustavus in Alaska, USA, covers a total area of 98 sq km and has a population of around 500.
Split by the Salmon River, it offers a contrast with its sandy beaches and the snow covered peaks of the Fairweather Range and the Chilkat Range. Formerly known as ‘Strawberry Point’, it is surrounded by the Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve and water. It is internationally known as the ‘Gateway to Glacier Bay National Park’.
Its coastal location gives it a mild winter. Temperatures in winter range from –3°C to 4°C, while temperatures in summer, they range from 11°C to 17°C.
Most of the inhabitants make a living through tourism, fisheries or local services. With its scenic beauty on full display and its unhindered wilderness, Gustavus is an adventurer’s delight.
