Situated in Haines Borough in Alaska, USA, Haines is located on the Lynn Canal between the Chilkoot and Chilkat Rivers. Spread over an area of 55.8 sq km, it is surrounded by glacier-covered mountains and innumerable lakes and rivers.
It has a maritime climate with cool summers, mild winters and heavy snowfall. Summer temperatures range from 7°C to 18°C, while winter temperatures vary from 2°C to –8°C.
It has a population of over 2,500. Alaska Natives consist about 18% of the population. Haines was originally Chilkat Indian Territory but is now predominantly a non-Native community.
Haines is home to the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve and the first US Military Base in Alaska, Fort William H Seward. It is now a popular arts and culture district and is known as a haven for artists.
