Tourist Guide Hilo

The coastal town of Hilo is the county seat of Hawaii County. Located near Hilo Bay, the town is spread over an area of 87.4 sq km and has a population of over 40,500.

Hilo lies in one of the wettest regions of Hawaii. Due to its proximity to the ocean, the temperatures do not vary much along the coast. The average temperature in summer is 28°C, while in winter, it is 26°C.

In ancient Hawaii, Hilo was a trade centre with sugar as its dominant industry. The town’s climate provided the perfect conditions for sugar plantation. After the closure of the plantations, tourism became the backbone of the economy.

As the largest community on the island of Hawaii, Hilo has gradually grown into a commercial city while maintaining the ambience of an old-fashioned, small town.
