The Hawaii State Art Museum in Honolulu honors local artists by displaying the work of the best Hawaiian artists.  Most of the work here is contemporary, with few, if any pieces dating before 1960.  Budget-conscious tourists will be happy to learn that this great cultural experience is completely free.

One of the most prominent artists featured here, Herb Kane, has his painting "The Discovery of Hawaii" on display, which is definitely worth a view while perusing both the permanent and temporary exhibitions at the museum.

The types of art on display here, in addition to classic paintings, include lacework, wood carvings, ceramic pieces, and even works of art on Hawaiian bark cloth.

The building itself is quite majestic and distinguished, and stands out in the modern architecture of downtown Honolulu.  It was used for many purposes, starting as a hotel and then converted to a YMCA, then a military housing installation.

Families should bring their kids along for this educational experience, since the back of the museum features a children's section with multiple interactive displays.
