For travelers seeking a cultural excursion in Honolulu, a visit to the Mission Houses Museum, a National Historic Landmark, will definitely serve as a satisfying educational experience.  The museum discusses the "missionary" period in Hawaii's history, which lasted from 1820 to 1863, and describes how American Protestant missionaries of the period influenced Hawaii's culture and shaped modern day Hawaii.

It of three Mission Houses: the Frame House, the Chamberlain House, and the Printing Office.  The Frame House was shipped from Boston in 1820 to serve as a communal residence for the first missionaries and their families.  The Chamberlain House, constructed from coral, serves as the museum's main Exhibition Gallery.  The Printing Office has special historic significance, since it is the first location in which printed materials were produced in Hawaii.  Here, missionaries bringing printing technology from the United States worked together with native Hawaiians to produce volumes in the Hawaiian language.

Past exhibits have also included artifacts depicting the everyday life of the early Protestant missionaries, such as the clothing, toys, and games they brought with them.  Tourists will also find it interesting to learn about the effort the early missionaries made to immerse themselves in the Hawaiian language and culture.
