Of all the museums in Honolulu, war buffs and airplane enthusiasts should definitely make the Pacific Aviation Museum their top destination priority. The museum is actually located inside old World War II-era hangars, most of which are battle-scarred after the attacks on Pearl Harbor in 1941. The museum's site boasts that it is the 8th nationally ranked aviation museum in the entire United States.
Transport to the aviation museum is provided by a shuttle bus from the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center to Ford Island, where the museum is located, which is still an active military base.
Upon entering the museum, you will be pass through Hangar 37 and be guided into a theater to watch a very short movie showing footage of the historic Pearl Harbor attacks.
After the initial entrance, walking through the museum corridors is like a journey through time. Visitors start by observing exhibits about what life was like in Hawaii prior to 1941, then they are educated about the attacks and how they impacted the island and history in general, and then move on to see planes used in attacks on the Japanese from 1942 on.
All in all, the museum was a great historic learning experience, and the planes on display will surely fascinate even the least military-knowledgeable tourist.
