Reviews Sand Island State Recreation Area
Sand Island State Recreation Area
For nature lovers visiting Honolulu, the Sand Island State Recreation Area is the perfect place to admire the natural beauty of the island of Oahu and enjoy the outdoors. Visitors here can camp (for only $12 a night), walk along the scenic routes in the 140-acre park, fish, or enjoy a day of board surfing.
Though the park is very close to downtown Honolulu and the docks, it provides an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, and some of the best views of the Oahu coastline, Honolulu Harbor, and the island's sunsets. It is usually a hangout for locals, so you are unlikely to bump into a huge swarm of tourists here.
History buffs can also find something to admire here. Old bunkers and lookout towers can be found throughout this grassy landscaped park, as Sand Island was used as a military lookout point during World War II.
There is a small sand beach located within the park, as it is right on the waterfront. Though perhaps not as well-known or scenic as other Hawaiian beaches, it provides a good place to get away from the crowds and admire the view.
