The Honolulu Zoo is the principal zoological institution of research of Hawaii and Honolulu County. This is the only zoo which is situated in United States which has been established by grants made by a sovereign monarch. This zoo was built on part of a 300 acre royal park in Waikiki known as Queen Kapiolani Park. The Honolulu zoo features more than 1,230 animals in specially designed habitats. There are over 750,000 people who come and visit this zoo in an annual basis. This institution is administered by the Honolulu zoo society. This society is a nonprofit organization and is maintained by a corps of volunteers.
