Downtown Honolulu is a busy neighborhood that stands in contrast with the relaxing beaches and parks of Hawaii.  If you can handle the busy streets, the downtown neighborhood is fascinating to explore; since it has always been the center of the city, its mix of modern architecture and historic sites, many of them designated National Historic Landmarks, will give an interesting glimpse into both old and new Hawaii.

Tourists walking around downtown Honolulu can explore any one of its four districts: the Capitol District, Central Business District, Chinatown, and the Waterfront.

The Capitol District holds many government and historic buildings within its boundaries, such as the federal offices and Iolani Palace, the historic residence of Hawaiian royalty, now operating as a museum.  The Central Business District represents the modern business era of Honolulu, with many skyscrapers and distinctly modern buildings rounding out the skyline here.

Chinatown is the historic center of Chinese culture on the island, and the traditions of many Chinese immigrants are still visible in the numerous herbal shops and Chinese eateries.  Today, it is known for the O'ahu open-air market, definitely of interest to travelers looking for an island shopping experience.

Lastly, the waterfront of downtown Honolulu houses the historic dock where most passenger ships would arrive before widespread air travel to Hawaii.  Tourists can get a glimpse of the Aloha Tower, a beautiful old lighthouse which was once Honolulu's tallest building.
