When you think of Hawaii, you immediately think of Waikiki Beach. The finest (and most expensive) beach in the world is located here. It forms a major part of all photographs centring on Diamond Head (a hill formed from volcanic ash), which towers majestically over the region.
A significant attraction of the island is Pearl Harbour, which was attacked by the Japanese airplanes in 1941 and resulted in the US joining World War II. There are two memorials here: USS Arizona Memorial (which is built over the sunken hull of the USS Arizona ship commemorating the US entry into World War II) and Battleship Missouri Memorial (the site where Japan surrendered to the Allied forces and ended the war).
Visit Iolani Palace, the only royal residence on American soil, built in1882 by the last King of Hawaii. The bright red-green Kuan Yin Temple for Buddhist worship is also worth a visit, alongside the renowned Bishop Museum and the Honolulu Academy of Arts.
