Kauai is the oldest and fourth largest island in Hawaii. It is located in northern Hawaii, near the centre of the Pacific Ocean. It is also known as the ‘Garden Isle’, and has a population of approximately 60,000 residents.
Waimea, located towards the south-west of the island, was the first place in Hawaii to be visited by the British explorer Captain James Cook in the eighteenth century. The economy of the region is undergoing diversification from agriculture to tourism and science and technology.
The region is characterised by a typical maritime-temperate climate and has mild, uniform temperatures accompanied by high humidity almost all through the year. The island witnesses regional variations in rainfall.
