The Shangri-La was the former Duke Doris’s residential home which was built in 1930 and has the finest collections of Islamic art.

The tours to Shangri La are booked through the Honolulu Academy of arts and the tour begins with the introduction of Ms Duke and the history of the place.

Ms Duke was a tobacco heiress who owned the property and was enthralled by the Islamic art and architecture which is why she has such a fine collection here.

This elegant mansion with glass walls which lower into the basement with the push of a button is so well designed that it is a must place to stop at.

The tour takes you to the entry hall, the living room, and interior courtyard, dining room, Mihrab Hallway, Lanai, Turkish room, guest powder room and the Mughai garden.

As the tour comes to an end you return to the academy which has a restaurant where you can have lunch.

The gift shop in this place has an excellent collection of books and more.
