Located on the shore of Kachemark Bay and on the southwest side of the Kenai Peninsula, Homer is situated in Alaska, USA and covers an area of 58.1 sq km.
Homer Spit—a long narrow piece of land jutting into the Kachemark Bay—is a major attraction. Homer displays snow-capped mountains with glaciers winding their way into the ocean. It is blessed with sandy beaches, a spacious harbour and a beautiful coastline.
It has a maritime climate. During winter, temperatures range from –10°C to –2°C, while summer temperatures vary from 7°C to 18°C.
Homer is named after Homer Pennock, a gold mining company promoter, who arrived here in 1896. Homer has a population of just over 5,000. Commercial fishing is the largest contributor to the economy making Homer a hub of south-central Alaska’s fishing and tourism business.
Homer is also the ‘Halibut Capital of the World’.
