Shoshone is the county seat and the largest city of Lincoln County in Idaho. In 2000 census, the population was 1,398, out of which 547 were into households and 355 were families residing in the city. In contrast to the Shoshone Native American tribe, for which it is named, the name of the city is pronounced as “Show-shown” with a silent ‘e’.
Shoshone has been considered as the main railroad station in the Magic Valley region in Idaho. For many years, this city was the only Amtrak stop in southern part of Idaho. A few miles from the north of the city is the Shoshone Ice Caves, which are hollow subterranean lava tubes and stay cool for the ice inside them to remain frozen throughout the summer.
Shoshone city hosts the Mannie Shaw’s Old time Fiddler’s Jamboree in the park per year on the second Sunday in the month of July. Much of the land around the city is lava rock and this can make excavation for building problematic and limits the amount of useful farm land.
