Alton is a very popular city in Madison County, Illinois which is situated about 22 kilometers to the north of St. Louis, Missouri. The population was found to be around 34,511 at the 2006 census. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city is supposed to have a total area of about 16.6 square miles, out of 15.6 square miles is land and the remaining 1.0 square miles is under water. Maximum portion of the land is suitable for crop cultivation. Alton is supposed to be a very famous town of heavy industry and manufacturing in Illinois thus making it a great commercial centre of the state. Alton is also a very popular venue for parties, receptions, and honeymoons because of its beautiful climate and scenario. Maximum residents residing here have Catholic origin hence Christianity is the religion followed over here. The climate here is often cool with average temperatures of about 18 degrees thus adding to the attraction of the city.
