Tourist Guide Calumet City
A city in the Cook county of Illinois, USA Calumet City was founded in 1892 and is spread over an area of 7.3 square miles. It has a population of 30,071 as per the 2000 US Census estimates.
Initially referred to as West Hammond, it was in 1924 that the name was officially changed to Calumet City and nicknamed the Wild Cal or Cal City which sparks off the memories of West Hammond during Prohibition in 1919 where bootleggers found the law turning a blind eye towards them ran a gamut of illegal activities like gambling and prostitution. A number of nightclubs flourished along the State Street and was called “The Strip”. The lawmakers finally cracked down the illegal activities in the original Sin city.
The city also maintains parks and other recreation centers like golf course, fitness facilities and a stretch of forest preserves for its residents.
