The city of Champaign is located in Champaign County in the state of Illinois, USA. Originally called ‘West Urbana’, the city was renamed in 1860. Established in 1852, Champaign has a twin city, Urbana. Champaign, Urbana, and the village of Savoy together form part of the Champaign-Urbana Metropolitan Area.
Colonised by the French and the British, this area and its surroundings were handed to the USA in the late eighteenth century. This region has a rich history with African-American migration taking place in the nineteenth century.
The annual average temperature is around 18°C. It is best to avoid travel between the months of November and February, when the temperature touches around –5°C.
With a population of around 67,500, most locals are engaged in commerce and industry. The city features several technology firms and research institutes.
