Museum of Contemporary Art

Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art houses a museum, a cafeteria, a learning center and an impressive gift store. The gift store is two stories and is a great place to find a unique gift or a great coffee table book.

The building itself is simple, accessible, and spacious. Regardless of your artistic prowess, it is nice to take a walk through the museum and experience the world of modern art. ?On the ground floor immediately outside the back exit, there is a scenic balcony overlooking a small park, which features a lawn mowed in an abstract pattern.

The 2nd floor (where the museum entrance is located) has a couple of large rooms with interactive exhibits that you can touch, walk or sit on; a good exhibit for the kids in a museum they might otherwise find a bit boring.

The museum offers free 45-minute guided tours that are definitely worth signing up for as they provide backgrounds for both the art and the artist, giving insight into the historical and political significance of the various pieces.  Tuesdays are free and be sure to swing by Tuesday on the Terrace nights for live music and food.

The first Friday of every month the MCA offers a Happy Hour featuring music from a local DJ, specialty drinks at a cash bar and free appetizers. Tickets range from 13-18 dollars depending on whether you purchase them online or at the door.
