Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Photography, located in the South Loop neighborhood, is a small venue featuring a wide array of work from a variety of contemporary photographers. The space is small, but they utilize it well. The museum is free and they often have great little openings as well as various events and lectures. It definitely has the feel of a local’s museum and you’re not likely to be surrounded by hoards of tourists here.

The staff is generally quite pleasant and knowledgeable about the displays and on the second floor you can browse through monographs for various photographers. It’s a much quieter and more intimate space to view photography than some of Chicago’s larger (and more expensive) art venues.

Swing by on a cold winter day, walk around the galleries, and then head over to the Gage for a glass of wine. It’s a sophisticated, yet inexpensive way to spend an afternoon in Chicago.
